York County Safety Collab

This is what happens when you blend education, history, funding, and good leadership: The Crispus Attucks STEAM Ambassadors Program. Dr. Jamie Noerpel, Director of the York County Safety Collab, spoke to the local high school students about the history of the Codorus. A number of community leaders presented to the team to inspire our next generation to care for our history and our environment. Look what happens when we offer young people a fun place to learn over the summer with caring adults - we are safer together.

“Try it before you say you can’t,” says Jamiel Alexander to the cohort of 12+ students starting the Cooking with Connections internship. “We aren’t going to ask you to do something that’s going to hurt or harm you.”

His wife, Liz Morales, is the power behind this summer program. A chef who cares about her community, Liz applies her business background to teach the cohort not only how to cook, but financial literacy and safety as seen through the York City Fire Department’s lesson. Attention will absolutely be paid attention because the young people signed an agreement that they would not be on their phones - a refreshing focus on in-person relationship building.

Cooking Up Connections lasts six weeks in the wonderfully built out basement of York College’s Center for Community Engagement. The program will leave 12 more youth with real-world skills that makes them that much more ready for the workforce as well as inspiration to positively impact the community.

Together, Liz and Jamiel are building a powerful community through cooking and food. “The people closest to the problem are the solution,” says Jamiel. One look at the way Liz lovingly guides the blossoming chefs through the rules of the kitchen is enough to see their impact on our York County youth.

“We are here to serve them,” the International Conference of Police Chaplains instructor told the 20 emerging Police Chaplains. “Your beliefs as a minister have nothing to do with your chaplain responsibilities. If you can’t deal with that person whose beliefs are different than yours, leave now. Policing is hard enough.” Thus begins a new chapter of supporting the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of our law enforcement officers.

The 2025 police deaths in York County exposed significant gaps in support for first responders and, in particular, for our police officers. It was from these incidents that a realization emerged: a coordinated response from the clergy was needed. This realization became a conversation, and from the conversation, a solution was developed under the leadership of the York County Safety Collab.

The ongoing York County Chiefs and Clergy conversation provided the platform for open discussion. From these conversations, in conjunction with the Safety Collab, a solution began to formulate. A coordinated, county-wide chaplain program will address this gap by providing consistent, trained, and reliable support across all public safety agencies.
