Did you know a simple diaper box can become a therapy tool? 📦💛 Here’s how…

In this activity, this little one is using a diaper box as a sturdy surface to practice kneeling, balance, and two-handed play while exploring blocks.

When children play in a kneeling position, they are working on:
⭐ Core and hip strength
⭐ Balance and stability
⭐ Weight shifting and coordination
⭐ Using both hands together for play skills

Try it at home:
📦 Place a sturdy box in front of your child
🧸 Add favorite toys like blocks, cars, or puzzles on top
👏 Encourage reaching, building, and exploring with both hands

The best learning happens during everyday play — no fancy equipment needed! 💚

🌈 Looking for a screen-free activity that builds language, listening skills, and movement in less than 5 minutes?

This week’s Friday Play Spark is a Color Hunt!

Choose a color and challenge your child to find matching objects around the house, backyard, playground, or grocery store.

🧺 Materials:
• Nothing required!
• Optional: colored paper, paint swatches, chalk, or colored cups/baskets for sorting

✨ What it helps with:
• Following directions
• Vocabulary development
• Attention and listening
• Early concepts (colors, matching, sorting)
• Movement and exploration
• Joint attention

🗣️ Language to Target:
Pair gestures with words while pointing, showing, or handing objects.

Try:
👉 Point + “Look!”
👐 Reach + “Help”
🙌 Hold up item + “I got it!”
☝️ Point + “Red car!”
🤲 Hand item + “More?”
🎉 Show item + “Found it!”

💡 EI Tip:
Instead of quizzing your child (“What color is that?”), model the language you’d like them to learn. Children learn more from hearing language used in meaningful moments than from being tested on what they know.

👶 Make it Easier:
Choose just one color and help your child find items nearby. Follow their lead and celebrate every discovery.

🚀 Make it Harder:
• Find items with two colors
• Sort by color and size
• Set a timer
• Count how many of each color you find
• Go on a color hunt outside

👦👧 Involve Older Siblings:
Older siblings can:
• Pick the color challenge
• Hide colored objects
• Create a scavenger hunt
• Help younger siblings find matches
• Be the scorekeeper or photographer

This is a great way to turn sibling play into leadership opportunities while keeping everyone engaged.

Did you know that CVI (Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment) is actually the leading cause of childhood vision loss in the U.S.? 🌟

Unlike typical vision problems, CVI happens in the brain, not the eyes. A child's eyes can be completely healthy while their brain struggles to process, recognize, and make sense of what it's seeing. This can affect everything from visual attention to how a child moves through and understands their world.

Meet Jen, our Special Instructor specializing in Vision! With a background in Visual Impairment Education and specialized training in CVI and complex medical needs, Jen helps families understand how their child experiences the world visually and find the right tools and strategies to support them.

With 17 years at Step By Step, Jen brings deep expertise to one of the most specialized—and often misunderstood—areas of Early Intervention.
