As we wrap up the month of May and AAPI Heritage Month ๐Ÿฎ, it's important to draw attention to the disparities in mental health care and awareness in the AAPI communities ๐Ÿง . It turns out that the family environments we grow up in inform a lot of our experiences and behaviors in adulthood! A UMass Mind study looks to investigate the link between emotional regulation strategies, parental emotional coaching, and depression. This work highlights why culturally informed care matters as we continue to draw attention to mental health disparities ๐ŸŒฟ!

As we wrap up the month of April ๐ŸŒธโœจ, it's important to take some time to reflect on what this month meant. April is recognized as National Stress Awareness Month ๐ŸŒฟand we hope that this month, you've learned more about the negative effects of stress and about ways to take care of your mental health. Looking back on this past month, we would like to highlight this unique connection to Schizophrenia. While stress itself does not cause Schizophrenia, there exists an important relationship between the two.

Serious Mental Illness (SMI) affects millions of individuals which includes even public figures we see through our phones everyday. Today we are celebrating these five celebrities, who by sharing their own experiences, are breaking stigma surrounding mental health and reminding us that it doesn't define who you can become ๐Ÿง โœจ

Individuals living with SMI face many health disparities including shorter life expectancies, higher rates of cardiometabolic diseases, and limited awareness of health risks. With our new education and prevention program, Weighing the Risks, Umass Mind strives to bridge this gap! Earlier in January, we held an event in partnership with Community Healthlink and had great turnout ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป. Thank you to our partner, Community Healthlink, and to our medical students and interns who made this event possible!
