Equity and The Touch That Heals: What Matthew 9 and Acts Show Us About God's Power, Physics, and Law.

If you read through the healing stories in Matthew 9, as I have this morning, one thing stands out right away: healing almost always happens through some kind of real, physical contact. Jesus lays his hands on people, he takes a little girl by the hand and raises her up, blind men feel his touch on their eyes, and then there's the woman who'd been bleeding for twelve years—she reaches out in the crowd and just brushes the edge of his cloak. In that moment, power flows, and she's made whole.

It's the same kind of pattern we see later in Acts. People start taking handkerchiefs and aprons that had simply touched Paul, carrying them to the sick, and diseases leave, evil spirits flee. The Bible isn't describing some kind of superstitious charm or automatic magic here. It's showing something deeper: divine power moving through ordinary, tangible things—hands, cloth, closeness.

Think about how energy works in the everyday world. Heat doesn't jump across empty space; it transfers through touch or conduction. Electricity needs wires or a path. Force requires contact. Nothing in nature happens in a vacuum—everything follows rules, structures, laws. The biblical healings feel like they're operating on the same principle.

God's power is real, it's transferable, but it flows within an ordered system.
What's really striking is how there's no randomness to it. These objects—garments, handkerchiefs—don't have some built-in magic. They become conduits because they participate in something God has set up: a world where the spiritual and the material aren't enemies or strangers. God doesn't bypass creation to do his work; he works right through it. Matter isn't a roadblock—it's the very vehicle he chooses.

So it's hard to escape the bigger picture: the physical laws we live by and the spiritual realities aren't two separate systems fighting each other. They're parallel expressions of the same mind, the same Creator. The consistency we see in how the universe runs mirrors the faithfulness in how God acts. Both point back to one intelligent design—coherent, woven together, and actually understandable. Power moves according to law, and that law carries purpose.

In the end, these accounts aren't just about miracles that happened long ago. They invite us to see the world as more integrated than we often assume: where the touch of faith, the closeness to Jesus (or those carrying his presence), still opens the door for something real and restoring.
