Hot Take: If your horse has to push through the heat so you can stay on schedule, the schedule has become more important than the horse.
Not every ride needs to happen.
South Carolina summers demand good judgment. Temperature is only one piece of the puzzle. Humidity, heat index, time of day, shade, airflow, footing, your horse's fitness level, and the intensity of the work all matter.
An open arena in full afternoon sun is different from a covered arena with good ventilation. A light lesson is different from conditioning work. A ride at sunrise is different from one during the hottest part of the day.
Good horsemanship isn't about sticking to the calendar no matter what.
It's about adapting when conditions change.
Sometimes that means riding earlier. Sometimes it means shortening the ride. Sometimes it means doing groundwork. And sometimes, the best decision is giving your horse the day off.
The horses in our care trust us to make decisions they can't make for themselves. They don't know what was written on the lesson schedule or training plan. They only know whether we listened when their environment asked us to.
That's the kind of horsemanship we should all strive for. Our horses don't owe us a ride simply because we planned one.
