Last weekend, My Mom and I went to Milwaukee from St. Paul by @amtrak train and we had a blast!

🚂It is a little confusing to understand how it all works so here’s everything you need to know for your next train trip ⬇️

💻 When you book tickets to Milwaukee Intermodal there are 4 options to choose from:

1. Empire Builder train 8 or 7
2. Empire Builder train 28 or 27
3. Borealis Train 1340 or 1333
4. Bus 8396 or 8391

🚂 Empire Builder trains all have:
~ Dining car
~ Cafe
~ Observation Car
~ Coach Seats Upper & Lower
~ Sleeper rooms
~ Goes between Seattle to Chicago

🚂Borealis train has (or doesn’t have):
~ Only a Cafe (no dining car)
~ Coach Seats Lower only
~ First class seats (no sleeper rooms)
~ Does not have an observation car
~ Goes between St. Paul and Chicago
~ Little faster than Empire Builder

🚌Bus
~ There is a bus option but I wanted a train experience so didn’t do any research on this

🚂My Mom and I chose the Empire Builder train as I wanted the Diner car and the Observation car experience.

🥗 Diner car
~ Diner car is just like a restaurant with waitstaff and a menu
~ Diner car meals are included in sleeper car price.
~ Coach seat passengers can purchase meals. Cost per person: $20 breakfast $25 lunch $45 dinner (dinner is a 3 course meal)
~ Sleeper cars get first dibs, Coach class can go to dining car and make reservations.
~ 4 people sit at a table and you do sit with other people if you have less people in your party.
~ If you are in a sleeper car, you can get room service

🍔 Cafe
~ Order food at a window
~ There are tables in this area
~ Cafe food like burgers, hot dogs, sandwiches, cookies, ect.
~ Drinks offered are coffee, water, soda, wine, beer and select mixed drinks

🌅 Observation car
~ if seats are not available, people don’t stay long so check often
~ sit on the left side - better views

💺Coach Seats
~ Seats recline and there’s a foot rest
~ First seats in a train car will not have tables in front of you (drop down like in an airplane)
~ Luggage goes above your head- make sure you can lift it
~ For bigger luggage, you can leave in open shelving on lower car
