A recent comment on my page suggested that only one person on an EMS scene is responsible for patient care. I respectfully disagree.

While one provider may lead a scene, a patient belongs to the entire EMS team. EMS professionals have a duty to act within their training and an ethical duty to do no harm.

Integrity means speaking up when something isn't right. When it comes to protecting a patient, rank should never prevent someone from speaking up.

Patient safety is a shared responsibility.

I'm starting a series of short videos that will walk through this case from the beginning, one fact at a time.

Today's video focuses on Dr. Lisa Evans, the former Medical Director for Davidson County EMS.

I contacted the North Carolina College of Emergency Physicians and asked whether they tell EMS providers not to resuscitate in a case like Colton's.

Their answer was no.

I was told they gave Dr. Lisa Evans the same answer after she had called before me.

There are North Carolina state EMS protocols, and those protocols were not followed in Colton's case.

That leaves me with one question:

Why would the former Davidson County EMS Medical Director need to call and ask whether EMS should resuscitate when there were already state protocols to follow?
