AG Day at Statham Elementary was March 20, the first day of Spring. The annual event focuses on showing young students about the importance of agriculture to their lives.
The Barrow County Historical Society participated by displaying historic photos of Barrow’s connection to the land and showing off some items related to farm life from years ago including a hand-cranked ice cream churn and a vintage milk can donated to the museum by local families.
Volunteers Joan and Michael Tiller, Judy Ann Eicher, Elaine Wright and Mary Alice Lay joined LeAnne Akin to engage with the students and point out the local tie to Future Farmers of America. Statham High School, which had its last graduating class in 1950, started Georgia’s first FFA chapter in 1928.

When thinking of the Town of Bethlehem, manger scenes and Harrison Poultry likely come to mind.
At the Oct. 23 membership meeting of the Barrow County Historical Society hosted at the Bethlehem Community Center, displays spotlighted both.
Ann Stowe Wilburn, whose father worked at Harrison Poultry as did her husband, Donnie (42 years), shared some of the amazing contributions made by Harold Harrison and his family's ag businesses which have employed thousands.
Harold Harrison also honored the memory of his parents by funding the construction of Bethlehem First United Methodist Church's sanctuary and fellowship hall on Christmas Avenue.
More from the meeting to come.
