With Hurricane Idalia intensifying and bearing down on Florida we’d like to remind our clients with battery systems to prepare their systems for a prolonged grid outage with these simple steps:
1. Check your monitoring app and ensure your batteries are set to full charge. Ensure the StormWatch/WeatherGuard is active. As an extra measure of protection we suggest switching your battery reserve to 100% starting Tuesday morning until the storm threat is passed.
2. During the actual storm solar production will be low. It is critical that you ration your energy reserves. Make sure your internet is connected to a backed up breaker and monitor your production and battery levels through the app. Raise your thermostat and avoid unnecessary electricity usage.
3. After the storm passes and the sun returns your production will increase, recharging your batteries and giving you more flexibility to consume energy. Again, monitor your production and battery levels in your monitoring app.

We hope everyone prepares well and makes it through this storm safely. We will be making time available today and tomorrow before the storm for any clients who would like further assistance or guidance. Please reach out if that is you.

Backup generators use during recent storms may be causing more harm than good 07/08/2023

In the thick of storm season here in Florida many are thinking about their backup options to keep their homes online when disaster strikes. Standby and portable generators are common options but are not without their dangers. As a hazardous materials technician with the fire department, I often responded to carbon monoxide alarms resulting from generators and other gas appliances inside the homes. Without these alarms many of the homeowners and their families would have fallen asleep and never woken up! If you decide to run a generator this year here are a few tips to keep your family safe:
1. Ensure the generator is running outside, away from the home and away from any air intakes in an area with good ventilation.
2. Install carbon monoxide detectors in your living areas, especially areas where your family will be during an outage and where they sleep.
3. Be alert to signs and symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning including unexplained headache, dizziness and fatigue. When in doubt get outside, shut off the appliance, and call the fire department.

If you are looking for a safer, more reliable alternative to a generator, we specialize in designing comprehensive backup systems using solar and batteries. No fuel, no combustion, no maintenance, and most importantly NO CARBON MONOXIDE! Reach out today to learn more!
