Unpopular opinion: "Exercise your stock options early to minimize taxes" is only half the story.
It feels like everyone repeats this advice. And yes, exercising early can reduce the spread between your strike price and fair market value.
But here's what that advice misses:
➡️ If you exercise ISOs early and the stock price drops, you're paying taxes on gains that no longer exist
➡️ If you exercise during your kid's FAFSA income window, you might eliminate tens of thousands in financial aid
➡️ If you exercise without checking AMT thresholds, you could trigger an unexpected tax bill with no cash to cover it
The better advice: Exercise strategically based on YOUR complete financial picture, not generic timing rules.
What's one piece of stock option advice you've heard that turned out to be way more complicated in practice?

The LLC structure you set up years ago might be costing you thousands in unnecessary taxes.
When your business is just starting out, an LLC taxed as a partnership usually makes sense.
But once you're consistently earning $400K-$500K+? That's often the inflection point where an S-corp election starts saving real money.
The key is timing.
Switch too early → you might limit your retirement contributions
Wait too long → you're overpaying on self-employment taxes for years
This is exactly why entity structure reviews matter as your business grows. What worked at $200K doesn't always work at $500K.
Our latest guide from Michael Sicuranza and Cheryl Starr breaks down how to think about this decision (and why having an advisor who can run the numbers with you makes all the difference).
What questions do you have about entity structure as your business scales?

Should you do a Roth conversion this year or wait? How much can you gift without impacting your long-term security? Which charitable strategy maximizes both impact and tax benefits?
As Abby McCloskey shares in her year-end planning guide, the most valuable strategies are the ones customized to your unique circumstances.
The answers to those questions depend on your tax bracket, your timeline, your family goals, and what you're building toward.
That's the difference between financial advice and financial partnership. Learn more in our Connect Meeting, a time for you to ask questions, gain insights, and take the first step toward a stronger 2026.
