Fire update from Gannon at WECT…

THE QUARRY ROAD FIRE just outside of Shallotte was a scary neighbor in this stark photo from Andrea Taylor late Friday evening. Against 100-degree temperatures, 30 mph wind gusts, and a landscape locked in exceptional drought, firefighters battled to get this 300-acre fire to 60% containment as of this post.

ROAD CLOSURES include Village Point Road, the Bricklanding Roundabout (southbound traffic), Bay Road at Todd Road, Todd Road northbound from Bricklanding to Village Point Road, Hale Swamp Road just before Old Georgetown Road, and Old Georgetown Road at Ocean Isle Beach Road.

WEEKEND WEATHER includes southwest winds near 15 mph Saturday afternoon, west winds near 5 mph Saturday night, and generally light and variable winds Sunday. Low to medium chances for showers and storms Saturday and Saturday night will trend higher Sunday and Sunday night as the heat wave breaks.
