Eboo Patel and Spencer Cox write in the Wall Street Journal of America not as a melting pot, but as a potluck where cultural identities are combined as well as celebrated. "This Independence Day weekend we should celebrate our great nation with parades and fireworks. But we should also take practical steps to live out the creed of the Founding Fathers by building a community where more people can see themselves in the Declaration’s promise, believe in it, and feel they have a stake in its future. This is a day to marvel at the freedoms the Founding Fathers insisted we share—the freedom to practice our diverse faiths, without violence or hatred. The freedom to assemble peaceably, as we do in neighborhood potluck meals.

Host a potluck this summer. Or go to one. Ronald Reagan said in his 1989 farewell address, “all great change in America begins at the dinner table.” If we want to live out our ideals more fully as a country, we could begin by sitting down with our neighbors."
