During an ultrasound, a small handheld probe sends out very high‑frequency sound waves that humans cannot hear. These sound waves travel into the body and bounce off structures like the uterus and the baby.

When the sound waves bounce back, the machine measures how long they take to return and how strong they are. A computer then turns that information into pictures on a screen, showing in real time what the fetus looks like and how it's moving. After about 6 weeks, the machine can also show and measure the heartbeat.

These sound waves are gentle and safe, and they do not harm the baby or the person who is pregnant.
