Artist Barbara Gabel from Newton, Kansas, depicts familiar sights from America’s heartland in her two acrylic paintings included in Land That I Love, an exhibition celebrating America’s 250th anniversary at Mark Arts.

“Tornados and wheat fields are common icons of Kansas,” she said of her piece “Trouble’s Comin.” “I chose the odd colors in the clouds to express the majesty in its power as it rips through the helpless trees and fields in its path.”

Gabel’s “Strolling Through the Flint Hills” is of a much calmer nature, displaying fall colors and limestone post stones.
