First Week Recap

While the first week in the legislature might appear quiet, it was anything but. Dozens of bills have been introduced and are already beginning their journey through the legislative process.

Notable events included the inaugural State of the Military address in the House Chamber, delivered by Maj. Gen. Michael Venerdi, the Adjutant General of Kansas. We also heard from Chief Justice Marla Luckert of the Kansas Supreme Court, who presented the State of the Judiciary address. Additionally, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly delivered the annual State of the State address.

On a personal note, I wore a tie that belonged to my late friend and colleague, Rep. Les Mason, who passed away this past summer. Les had an incredible ability to unite us, inspire us, and remind us to find joy in our work. His legacy lives on in the traditions he loved, like wearing camel hair jackets on Wednesdays—a nod to his playful nickname for the day, “Hump Day.”
