Deaf individuals can use videophones to make calls for things like appointments, calling family, ordering food, and more—similar to using FaceTime.

Video phone services like Sorenson and Purple work much like providers such as Verizon or T-Mobile. They give you your own phone number and access to their service.

To make a call, you log into the videophone service and connect with a sign language interpreter. You then tell the interpreter the phone number you’d like to call. The interpreter places the call and relays the conversation—signing what the other person says to you and voicing what you sign to them.
