26-year-old Damion Christopher Hazelton Jr. has agreed to a plea deal in connection with the June 23rd shooting last year that claimed the life of 49-year-old Christopher "Chris" Baker.
β
Damion pled no contest to charges of Involuntary Manslaughter for recklessly killing Chris, Criminal Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, Aggravated Burglary for entering a GMC Yukon with intent to commit theft while Chris was present, & Interference with Law Enforcement for trying to hide evidence by changing his clothes & fleeing the scene. Initially, he faced more severe charges, including Second-Degree Murder, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Aggravated Burglary, & Attempted Theft of a Firearm.
β
At 2:19 PM that day, officers were dispatched to what was initially reported as a vehicle accident near the intersection of Lincoln & San Pablo, close to Lincoln & Woodlawn. While en route, they were informed of a drive-by shooting in the same area. Upon arrival, first responders found a red GMC Yukon that had crashed into a building. Chris was discovered slumped over in the driver's seat, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
β
Investigators discovered that just before the shooting, two men were seen interacting with Chris. One of them was later identified as Damion. Following the incident, a witness reported seeing Damion on the passenger side of the SUV, searching through the front of the vehicle & taking items. The witness also observed him going through Chris's pockets & heard him say, "He has hella dope & money."
β
Security footage captured Damion fleeing the scene with an object in hand. He returned to a nearby apartment, changed his clothes, & fled once more. The next day, police received a tip about Damionβs location, leading to his arrest. During the investigation, Damion reportedly told someone that the shooting occurred during an attempted robbery & that he intended to alter his appearance by removing a tattoo.
β
A month before the shooting, on May 17th of last year, Damion was sentenced to a year of probation, with a potential underlying 13-month prison term, after being convicted of aggravated child endangerment & aggravated battery. This conviction was related to severe injuries sustained by a 3-month-old girl who was hospitalized in April 2022. Court documents indicate that the girl is Damion's biological daughter.
β
The child suffered a broken collarbone, a skull fracture, & bleeding on both sides of her brain. Court documents revealed that her parents brought her to the hospital, claiming she had fallen off a bed. However, medical professionals concluded that the injuries were acute & indicative of abuse, not consistent with the parents' explanation of a fall. "She[medical staff] reiterated the cause of injury was child abuse and abusive head trauma-specifically violent shaking of the child. The fractured clavicle injury was consistent with the perpetrator forcibly grabbing the child as it is being shaken. The subdural hemorrhages would also be the result of violent shaking. The broken frontal bone injury was consistent with the child being thrown onto a hard surface or by the child being swung or hit into a hard surface."
β
Damion's been in custody since his arrest on June 24th, 2023 with a bond of $600,000. His sentencing is scheduled for November 21st.
