Pay attention to emails related to money. If you think it sounds "phishy," you are probably right.
A phishing attack from "halonjohnny3" - All Net Connections My brother Bob, founder of All Net Connect, preaches creating a “culture of security.” He has a point. Last week, All Net’s culture of security protected my bank account from a would-be “phishing” thief called “”. (Do NOT send an email to that address.*) The sto...
Did you get an email from your Aunt Sophie about pictures "you'll want to see?" Sorry. That wasn't Aunt Sophie. And there are no pictures.
Did the Geek Squad send a thank-you note for your $299 order, paid for by your PayPal account? Nope. That wasn't the Geek squad. Your account probably wasn't charged, either. (But DO check it. Maybe change your password, too. We changed ours.)
These are "phishing" emails we got just in the last couple of days (we changed Aunt Sophie's" name). The phishers hoped we'd open their emails and set ourselves up for fraud. Phishing scams can pretend to be from Google, Dropbox, PayPal, Outlook, the Geek Squad...almost any organization. Or our friends. Even our beloved and trusted Aunt Sophie.
Examine emails for anything "phishy." For example, it might say it's from Aunt Sophie, but the "From:..." line, might have an odd return address like "[email protected]." Don't look. Delete.
Clunky language used to be a dead giveaway for phishing. Now artificial intelligence and sophisticated "large language models" like Chat GPT can massively scan social media and learn to mimic writing styles. It's called "social engineering." So, if Aunt Sophie's got pics, delete the email and give her a call. (It's probably about time you did anyway.)
