One of the simplest ways to improve an interaction is to slow down—just enough to gather one more piece of information (obviously we don't always have that luxury)...
Those extra few seconds can change your communication, your approach, and sometimes the entire outcome.
Slowing down doesn't mean going slow. It means responding with intention instead of reacting by default.
One more tool for the toolbox.

Myth: "If someone is nonverbal, they don't understand what's happening."
This is one of the most important misconceptions I address in class. Being nonverbal simply means a person has difficulty using spoken language. It does not tell us how much they understand.
Many individuals who are nonverbal understand conversations around them,
recognize what's happening, understand instructions, and are fully aware of how others are speaking about them.
Imagine being unable to answer questions while hearing people talk about you instead of to you. For first responders, healthcare professionals, educators, and caregivers, one simple habit can make a tremendous difference:
- Explain what you're doing.
- Speak respectfully.
- Address the individual directly, even if someone else is helping communicate.
Will this change every outcome? No.
But it preserves dignity, builds trust, and often reduces fear during already stressful situations.
Communication is a safety skill.

Thinking about hosting a Human Trafficking & Missing Persons Investigations class at your department, but want to see it first?
This fall, we're offering two open-enrollment opportunities for agencies to send personnel and experience the course before deciding whether it's a good fit for their own organization.

This one-day course is approved for 2026 CPEs and will fulfill the requirements for 2027 mandatory CPEs.
If you've been considering bringing this training to your agency, these sessions provide an opportunity to "test drive" the course, gather feedback from your personnel, and determine whether it would be valuable for your department.
Sometimes the easiest way to evaluate a training program is to put a few officers in the classroom and see what they come back talking about.
Happy National Smile Day 🙂
Yeah, yeah… “Just smile more,” right? Tell that to the people running on 4 hours of sleep, back-to-back chaos, and caffeine that stopped working two shifts ago.
Here’s the real version:
Your smile doesn’t have to be fake.
It can be tired. Sarcastic. Slightly unhinged. Still counts.
Because sometimes the win isn’t being happy—it’s getting through the day without losing your mind.
So if you’ve got even a half-smile in you today…that’s enough. Keep going.
