It’s great to hear people like C4 on WBAL praising my childhood home state - yes Mississippi is leading on educational achievement by focusing back on the basics and demanding accountability for students and their system. Also, unstated in most of the analysis I’ve seen is that supporting teachers in the classroom when discipline problems arise is also a piece to this…the superintendent here is the one who initiated many of these changes but the legislature, governor and local school systems have to buy in. A lot less snickering about the Deep South from Maryland politicians and a lot more copying of what’s working for kids and families is what’s in order for Maryland to improve education for all students.

We need more answers and clarity on data centers and their impact, especially on ratepayers and residents. Many county governments - including Carroll County - are right to be pausing, listening to the community and asking questions.

We in Maryland Senate Republicans Caucus warned about this - and now the federal government is suing over the Community Trust Act that tried to stop local law enforcement - including Carroll County Sheriff DeWees and Frederick County Sheriff Jenkins from cooperating with federal law enforcement to remove dangerous criminals. Here was our warning in May:
“This bill creates real gaps in communication and coordination at a time when we should be strengthening both,” said Senate Minority Leader Senator Steve Hershey. “When law enforcement can’t share information or act in a timely way, the risk isn’t theoretical, it’s real. Marylanders deserve policies that put safety first, and this bill falls short.”
“This bill effectively makes Maryland a sanctuary state — full stop,” said Senate Minority Whip Senator Justin Ready. “It restricts cooperation with federal authorities, limits information-sharing, and ties the hands of law enforcement. You can call it whatever you want, but the end result is the same: less coordination, more risk, and fewer tools to keep our communities safe.”
