In 2014 Jean was diagnosed with breast cancer

“This was my strong place.”

Jean Hanks came to Prototype in 2012 having never thought of herself as an athlete. And in 2014 she endured one of the hardest things in her life— and yet kept showing up through all of it, with one rule for us: don’t treat me any different. We didn’t.

The year she was diagnosed turned out to be the highest-volume training year of her entire time here.
13+ years later, she’s still here and speaks about her story from a place of strength.

For National Cancer Survivor Month, Day 22 is Jean’s. Full story + her interviews at the link in bio. 🧡

Day 10 of 100. Real members, Real Stories.

Meet She watched from the sidelines first.

She came to Prototype because her youngest started CrossFit at 14. She took laps around the gym, got comfortable, and finally decided: if my kid can do it, maybe I can too.

That was November 2020. Since then: 1,124 sign-ins. 257 PRs. A 230 lb hip thrust PR — while losing 54 lbs. Blood pressure improved. Pre-diabetes gone.

But what she really built here was the steadiness to hold her family together through their hardest years.

Day 4 of 100 in 100. Our first video story.

came to Prototype after breaking her wrist and getting diagnosed with full-blown osteoporosis. She chose lifting over medication.

4 years. 561 workouts. 130 PRs later — her diagnosis changed.

This is what strength training actually does. 💪

Last night we had the honor of speaking with the winter athletes, parents, and coaches about one of the biggest performance “cheat codes” that’s not a workout: recovery. 💪❄️

Our core message was simple: stress + recovery = growth. Training is the stimulus… but the adaptation happens when you refuel and recharge. We dug into the “brilliance in the basics”:
• 😴 Sleep is non-negotiable (aim for 8–10 hours for high school athletes)
• 🍽️ Eat enough + timing matters (fuel before, during, and after practices/games)
• 🧠 Manage life stress + build routines that actually fit your week
• 🏋️‍♀️ Stay strong in-season with short, smart sessions so you don’t lose what you built

Huge thank you to Westborough High for having us—and a special shoutout to Athletic Director Levi Hanson for leading the charge to support athletes beyond the scoreboard. 🙌

If you were there and want the resources we shared, drop a comment or DM us and we’ll point you in the right direction. ✅
