Castle Fraser is one of the largest tower houses in Scotland, with a core that dates from as early as 1450.

The later additions made the building into the huge fortified structure it is today, and there are plenty of quirky features to discover - think hidden trapdoors, secret staircases and a spy hole.

The castle, which was a family home for more than four-hundred years, is filled with portraits, ornaments and mementos of the Frasers, all of which have their own colourful stories to tell about the lairds and ladies who once lived here.

According to one version, pine (lat. Pinus) got its name from the Celtic word “pin”, which means “rock”, “mountain”, that is, “growing on rocks”, or from the Latin words “pix”, “ picis", which means "resin", that is, "resinous tree".

And according to the ancient Greek myth, this plant bears the name of the nymph Pityos (Pythida), who was the beloved of the god Pan. .

But Boreas, the god of the cold north wind, because of unrequited love, turned the nymph into a beautiful evergreen tree, called Pinus.

Pan was often depicted with a pine wreath on his head.
