"McNeil gets an astonishing degree of complexity from his flat patterns. And instead of insisting on that flatness, the textures of his paintings always question it emphasizing an oblique rush into the distances of a painting, putting doubts to planarity, drawing the eye into regions where the atmosphere can go in an instant from serenely warm to harsh and chilly. The overall climate of McNeil's art is of course hot, even torrid. Sudden contrasts draw our attention to the prevailing weather, just as startling swoops into pictorial depths remind the eye that, after all, the action is on the surface."
