Weslaco ATPE recently celebrated staff with a special breakfast at Airport Elementary. Volunteers Gloria Silva, Jeanie Silva, and Maria "Aggie" Aguirre were on hand to serve up smiles! Volunteering for these ladies is a family affair: Gloria and Aggie are sisters, and Jeanie is their sister-in-law! Combined these amazing ATPE leaders have nearly 100 years of service to ATPE! (And Aggie recruited now-ATPE Membership Specialist Roger Gutierrez!)

Great News for Texas Teachers (Social Security)

Congress votes to repeal GPO and WEP

Overnight, the US Senate repealed previous legislation which reduced or limited Texas Teachers and many other individuals that receive pensions such as TRS from receiving full social security benefits or survivor benefits from their spouses. President Biden is expected to sign this legislation into law soon and President-elect Trump also gave his support for this law. This is a great victory for many of you and one that many teacher organizations such as ATPE, TCTA, AFT, TRTA, have advocated for years. If you have been a part of any of these organizations, then you have helped contribute to this success through your membership.

Congress votes to repeal GPO and WEP After more than 40 years of advocacy by ATPE and allies, landmark legislation will restore the rightfully earned benefits of public servants, including many Texas educators.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women, other than skin cancer, according to the CDC. It is crucial to understand the symptoms of breast cancer, and to seek treatment as soon as possible.

The CDC offers free/low-cost mammograms to low-income women who are uninsured/underinsured through the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Find out if you qualify on the CDC website.
