As we celebrate PT Month 2024 here are some fun facts about physical therapy in the United States.
A GROWING FIELD: Physical therapy is one of the fastest-growing healthcare fields in the U.S. The demand for physical therapists is projected to increase by 21% from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations.
VETERANS AND PHYSICAL THERAPY: The U.S. military and Veterans Affairs (VA) system were pioneers in promoting physical therapy as a critical part of rehabilitation, especially for injured soldiers during and after World War I.
EXERCISE OVER MEDICATION: Physical therapists emphasize exercise as a key tool in treatment, which can help patients avoid medications and even surgery in some cases.

Reduce Falls in 2024!
Ever find yourself in a wheelchair closet hoping to pick the right cushion for a patient at risk for a fall?
Here are 5 guiding questions to take the luck out of finding fall interventions:
#5 Is the pt trying to stand secondary to pain?
If so, start on the mat to check for a postural abnormality.
#4 Is your patient sacral sliding?
Resist treating the symptom, start on the mat to address the biomechanical etiology of sacral sitting.
#3 Is the current cushion bottomed out?
Check to ensure there is at least 2" of immersion for pressure redistribution over ischeal tuberosities. If there isn't, the patient will experience pain.
#2 Is the patient trying to self-mobilize?
If so, check to see if the patient has the ability to self-mobilize without sacral sitting or sliding, which can cause a fall. If they are not self-mobilizing, check to ensure that feet are fully loaded on the floor or on leg rests.
#1 Is the hammock seat stretched out?
A hammocked seat can cause IR/ADD which is painful.
