In this series, we explore how different nutrients are commonly incorporated into daily routines based on their biochemical characteristics.

Today: Probiotics

The gut is home to approximately 100 trillion microorganisms. That ecosystem collectively known as the gut microbiome plays a documented role in digestion, immune function, and increasingly, neurological health through what researchers refer to as the gut-brain axis.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when consumed in adequate amounts, are studied for their role in supporting the balance of that ecosystem.

Timing matters here more than most people realise.

Probiotics are commonly taken at night, away from food. The reasoning is biochemical digestive enzymes produced during meals can reduce the viability of probiotic cultures before they reach the gut. Taking them on an empty stomach, typically before bed, allows more cultures to survive the journey intact.

Strain specificity also matters. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are among the most studied genera in the research. Not all strains are studied for the same roles, and not all products contain strains at clinically relevant counts. The label notation CFU colony forming units indicates the number of live cultures present.

More is not always better. Strain selection and survivability are the more meaningful variables.

Consistency, as always, is the most important factor in any supplementation routine.
