New client this morning with pain in her psoas when riding her peloton. She had been to a chiropractor and a PT and still feeling pain the next day after a ride. Her PT had been releasing and stretching the muscle and the next day she would have terrible cramps in the surrounding tissue, making it painful to sit. Her goal was to start taking pilates classes and be able to get back on her peloton and not experience pain.

I first checked her inner core muscles (as I do with all new clients) to make sure they are functioning properly. Most issues resolve when you get the inner core performing properly. We found her transverse was not turning on and her pelvic floor was very tight. We went through some exercises to fix this and got the transverse to fire. We then practiced actively loading the psoas as it also was very weak.

All the stretching and releasing that had been done during her pt sessions was making her problem worse. By finding the root of the problem and building in functional strength, she will be able to get back on her peloton soon. Lots of homework first!

This is not uncommon and it often goes misdiagnosed. Yes, her psoas was inflamed and painful. But it was also very weak. Stretching it was not going to solve her problem.

Also- if you love getting on that bike πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ remember to breath low and deep and do not tense your pelvic floor muscles (which is easier said then done on the uncomfortable bike seat).
