Always check your service wire!!
They are designed to last several decades but our north eastern climate, and the fact that this side of the building faces South means this particular wire was under extra duress during its lifespan. You can’t always help where this is mounted on the house, but checking it once a year can help keep your eye on whether or not it needs repair. We took these pictures before the duct seal was applied to the service entrance connector on top of the meter enclosure so make sure you have that as well. Inexpensive and easy to apply yourself. It’ll save you from getting water into your electrical panel.

Got this call 2 days before my much needed and long overdue vacation, but we got it done…….
I’ve heard some elecricians say that using duct seal on your meter socket is a “nice bonus” but I’m telling you now, those weather tight connectors don’t necessarily keep water out completely even if you tighten them very well. Over time, the rubber seal can fail and water will leak in. Even just a little drip over time will lead to corrosion. In this case it ran down the neutral feed and corroded one side of this panel. We tightened the connector, added the duct seal, and now it’s nice and dry. Cleaned up as best as possible given budget, time, etc. and swapped the panel out for a new one. Also this panel was not grounded to a rod nor to the water service at the front of the house which is our next move once the spool of #4 ground wire arrives. Parts can still be troublesome to find on short notice. If you have this problem or would like an electrical evaluation, call us for a consultation.
