It's not a tip. It's not how we say, "Hey God, You did a really good job, You showed up for me, here's something for You."

And it's not a donation. It's not a tax deduction either, even though giving this way does turn out to be tax deductible.

Maybe the most surprising one: the tithe isn't even generosity. Because how could we be generous with something that already belongs to Him?

So if it's not generosity, what is it? It's obedience. Generosity is what we give above and beyond our 10%. But the tithe is what we return.

And we return it for one reason: because God is first in our lives.

But here's what makes this freeing. Returning the tithe trains our hearts to put God first, right where He belongs. And it reminds us Who provided it in the first place.
