Summit Legal Aid is closed today in honor of Juneteenth.
This is a day that memorializes June 19th, 1865, when the last group of slaves in Texas was freed from enslavement.
The Emancipation Proclamation was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln in January of 1863, which, in theory, freed all enslaved people in Confederate states. However, there were significant delays in the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation in areas that were still under Confederate control. Freedom was delayed for many enslaved people, particularly in Texas. On June 19, 1865- two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was supposed to take effect in all US states- Union Troops marched onto plantations and private homes, announcing freedom for enslaved people in Texas; this led to the celebration we now recognize as "Juneteenth."
We wish everyone a very happy Juneteenth as we reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and continue empowering marginalized people in our communities.
