I have not posted anything here in months, and this will probably be my last post here for a long time. Why? This page does not yield a meaningful business benefit to me in terms of story readership or quality conversations, obvious impersonations of Facebook security in messages from scammers here waste my time, and Mark Zuckerberg's recent and pathetic pivot to Trump loyalist does not make me want to reward his properties with free content.

So I've turned off messaging on this page and have stopped checking notifications for it--but I won't deactivate it, because it does still provide a useful look at how Facebook's advertising works.

Social media traffic to top news sites craters 10/03/2023

Hey, folks. It's been a while since I've posted anything here--and this chart from Axios may explain why. Management at Facebook has said nice things about journalism in the past, but their recent actions show they just don't care about my profession. Which undercuts the value of my doing free labor here.

In fewer words: It's not you, it's not me, it's them.

Social media traffic to top news sites craters Website business models that depended on clicks from social media are now broken.

What to know before you open your Comcast TV or internet bill: Rates are going up (again) 12/02/2022

Sorry for the Friday news dump, but Comcast is--again!--raising broadband and TV rates. And it's--still!--trying to prop up its decaying TV-bundle business by punishing people who only sign up for broadband with higher rates.

What to know before you open your Comcast TV or internet bill: Rates are going up (again) If you’re a Comcast subscriber, it’s not the most wonderful time of the year. The cable giant is raising its rates again.

A humbling gadget-handling lesson 10/03/2022

If you've recently shattered your phone's screen and could use some consolation that even an Experienced, Professional Technology Journalist could do something that dumb--you've come to the right place!

A humbling gadget-handling lesson The past four weeks have involved four work trips that took me to events in two other countries and two other states, with travel fatigue compounded by unchacteristically bad sleep in hotel rooms a…

I still don’t get the iPhone pre-order feeding frenzy 09/10/2022

It's not every day when I can look at a post I wrote a dozen years ago and see that it's held up almost completely. But it is, unfortunately, every year that so many people seem so bent on buying the new iPhone the minute it goes on pre-order.

I still don’t get the iPhone pre-order feeding frenzy Today, Apple started taking pre-orders for a new lineup of smartphones–the same thing it’s done every year since 2007. And just as they have every year since 2007, enough people tried t…

What Is 5G, and Does It Actually Make a Difference? 08/16/2022

The question I get about technology most often these days is "what's the deal with 5G?" Meaning: "I thought it was supposed to so much more awesome than it appears in reality." To try to answer that question, I wrote this explainer for the NYT's Wirecutter.

What Is 5G, and Does It Actually Make a Difference? 5G may seem like a confusing mess of buzzwords, but it’s not all marketing hype. We explain the situations where it can provide tangible benefits.
