AADT tells part of the story—but not the whole story.
A recent ITE Journal article explored how crash risk changes throughout the day on urban freeways. By examining hourly traffic volumes, speeds, and crash data, researchers found that some of the highest crash risks occur during late-night and early-morning hours, even when traffic volumes are low.
The study also found that differences in vehicle speeds may be a stronger contributor to crash risk than average speed alone.
These insights can help transportation agencies better target safety improvements, enforcement efforts, and real-time traffic management strategies.
Read the latest research in ITE Journal and discover why looking beyond AADT can lead to smarter safety decisions.

This month's Women in ITE blog addresses burnout in the transportation industry.
Transportation professionals have a significant impact on safety, mobility, and quality of life, but the demands of the field are leading to increasing burnout. Heavy workloads, tight deadlines, complex stakeholder dynamics, and evolving regulations create ongoing pressure, while long project timelines can make work feel never-ending.
Organizational culture and expectations—such as constantly managing competing priorities and staying highly responsive—add to the strain. Combined with blurred work-life boundaries in a digitally connected environment, these factors contribute to mental fatigue, reduced motivation, and a loss of passion for the profession.
