I first shared this image in 2017, asking people to pick a side. Hoping they’d pick the side against N***s—the ones in Charlottesville, but the ones in every corner of the country too, the ones emboldened by our then (and unfortunately current) president. Obviously many of us picked the wrong side, so here we are. Trump’s doing all the things he told us he would in Project 2025, the plan you said we were insane to believe. He’s abducting people off the street, he’s making attempts to dismantle a free press, he’s deploying the military against citizens because he doesn’t like what they have to say, he’s stripping away government assistance, he’s trying to suppress voters, he’s allowing people across the world to die of illness and starvation that we had the power and money to prevent, and now he’s calling to hang elected officials for speaking truth. All while pretending the enemy is poor people, not him and not the ones who profit from all this suffering.

If you haven’t picked a side yet, you better hurry up. Time’s running out, people are being locked up, critics are being threatened and silenced. And the spineless Republican Congress members aren’t gonna save you, so if you can’t make some trouble for others, consider that you might just be next.

Been a while since I’ve made something. So I went all in and made like 5 somethings 😅 But when a friend of a friend was putting on an art show where all proceeds would go to Ayuda, I jumped at the chance to paint again. It’s been a busy couple of weeks!

“provides legal, social, and language services to help low-income immigrants in our neighborhoods access justice and transform their lives.” I really admire their work, and for a while I was really kicking myself for not having a skill more applicable to truly helping my immigrant neighbors (law school would be helpful right now). As much as I’m still not thrilled about my lack of true skills, this is one (of many) small way to use what you’ve got. Anyway, I thought an art show was a great idea, so I wanted to share in case someone else wants to do the same in their own community.

I’ll be sharing a few pieces big and small over the next few days. This is a small one, obviously, but the colors make me happy!!

I shared this in 2017. How many times will it be relevant? Again and again and again. From Charlottesville to the Oval Office. Take a side, make a scene.

This weekend there was an act of terrorism in Charlottesville. White supremacists, N***s, K*K members, and other members of the “Alt Right” movement, marched around with sw****kas and torches and chanted about their superiority. It seems like a pretty cut and dry issue. Obviously N***s and K*K members are horrendous people. And I know these people aren't anything new. They've been around. That's discouraging enough in itself. But what angers me most is that there is an atmosphere in which they feel comfortable stepping out from behind their computers and showing their faces in public. In the current state of our country, they aren't terrified to be found out. And still I can’t help but notice the deafening silence that continues. Or even further, the comments like “it started as a peaceful protest.” There is no peaceful way to wear a N**i sw****ka. There is no peaceful way to put on a white hood. There is no peaceful way to yell slurs at your minority neighbors. There is no peaceful way to assert that your white life is more important than the lives of your black neighbors. And it’s time that people quit maintaining an attitude of neutrality. So often when people speak out against injustice, they’re categorized as “making a scene.” Well. You may be able to stay quiet and stay safe, but your silence only serves to embolden real life N**i skinheads. N***s. In 2017. Yes. There is one side here, and growing up in a post-WWII era, we should all know what it is by now. How many of us grew up watching WWII movies thinking, man I’d NEVER be one of those cowards who stood in the corner and let someone terrorize my neighbors like that. Well, my friends, here’s your chance. Open your mouth. Take a risk. Make a scene. (PS I’m selling this print to raise money for City of Promise Charlottesville, an organization that works in low income areas to educate children and provide them with a pathway to success. Another project from this month! This is a 24x30 inch acrylic recreation of a photograph I was sent. Such a sweet photo, but the lighting wasn't great, and the picture was pretty underexposed. Luckily with a painting, that wasn't an issue, and now it's a huge piece in their home!
