Frances Glessner Lee (1878-1962), aka “the mother of forensic science,” constructed miniature replicas of crime scenes, known as the “Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death,” to train homicide detectives during the 1930’s to 1960’s. Lee was a criminologist, the first female police captain in the U.S., and a skilled artist who combined science and art to help detectives scientifically approach their crime scenes and search for truth.

This presentation highlights the collaboration between industrial hygienists and objects conservators that culminated in a successful conservation project involving the identification of hazardous materials, exposure assessment, and the development and implementation of a treatment plan that would stabilize the models and allow for a major rewiring and lighting campaign. This effort resulted in the preservation of the Nutshells and their continued use in training detectives.
