In 1939, when Opal Lee was 12 years old, a racist mob attacked and destroyed her family’s home in Fort Worth, Texas, simply because they were a Black family moving into a predominantly white neighborhood. The mob, estimated at around 500 people, vandalized the house, broke windows, and dragged furniture into the street to smash it. The police were present but did not intervene. Lee and her family were forced to flee and never returned to that home.    More than 80 years later, in 2024, Opal Lee—now a 97-year-old civil rights activist known as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”—was gifted a new home built on the same lot where her family’s house once stood. Trinity Habitat for Humanity, which owned the land, sold it to her for $10 and constructed the new house at no cost, with support from local organizations.   This homecoming was especially symbolic, as it coincided with Juneteenth, a holiday Lee had long championed to become a national observance. In 2021, her efforts were realized when Juneteenth was declared a federal holiday.
