A new investigation shines a spotlight inside five fur farms in northern China, sparking renewed calls for an end to fur imports around the world.

Every wild impulse these animals have to run, swim, nest and dig is thwarted again and again, causing chronic stress. Many of them repeatedly pace or bob their heads, both signs of psychological distress. Essentially, they spend their short lives going crazy before being electrocuted or bludgeoned to death.

It’s inherently cruel’: former fur industry boss now backs total EU ban 05/21/2026

According to a former chief executive for the British Fur Trade, "If it is morally and legally wrong to keep, say, a dog caged for its entire life, why is it ok for a fox? A raccoon dog? A mink or chinchilla? By any measure of social and political ethics, this is inconsistent and hypocritical."

"But we know that animals like mink can contract respiratory viruses from humans, whether we’re talking about certain types of coronavirus strains or even some types of flu virus strains. They can contract those viruses, incubate them, allowing them to mutate, and then pass them back to people. This is a huge risk. And again, the point is that this is an industry in decline that is not used to keep people alive. It’s really just to support luxury demand."
