20 years after Katrina, experts say divides in disaster preparedness, recovery persist | ASU News 08/06/2025

Experts recently gathered at ASU’s Barrett & O’Connor Center to explore America’s disaster preparedness after Hurricane Katrina.

During the event, speakers explored how divides in disaster recovery and preparedness still exist 20 years after the hurricane devastated New Orleans. They discussed how climate disasters disproportionately affect poor, rural and underrepresented communities, which contributes to infrastructure funding decisions.

“There's a very deep resilience divide in America,” Resilience Force Executive Director Saket Soni said.
