Introducing Hannah Kaufman, Ph.D., MPH – Age-Friendly DC Program Officer

I’m honored to join the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services (DMHHS) as the Age-Friendly DC Program Officer. I come to this role with a diverse background in health and aging spanning federal policy, research, and community-based work.

I earned both my Ph.D. and Master of Public Health from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. After working as an Aging and Disability Policy Research Postdoctoral Scholar with the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Washington - School of Medicine, I moved to Washington DC to join the Health and Aging Policy Fellows Program. As a Fellow, I served as a Health Policy Fellow in the office of U.S. Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia, where I advised on health and aging issues and supported bipartisan efforts to strengthen long-term care through the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act. Post-fellowship, I worked too briefly as a Health Science Policy Analyst in the Office of Legislation, Policy, and International Activities of the National Institute on Aging. Other roles that have shaped my views and provided me with invaluable experience include Peace Corps Paraguay Rural Health and Sanitation Volunteer, Fulbright U.S. Student Researcher, Mental Health Technician in a psychiatric hospital, and Medical Assistant in a primary care and addiction medicine clinic.

I have already had the privilege of collaborating with Age-Friendly DC over the last year and believe deeply in the work of age-friendly cities and communities to identify and address barriers to the well-being and participation of older people.

I look forward to working across agencies, neighborhoods, and sectors to strengthen work and systems that promote independence, dignity, and inclusion for older adults across the District.

Looking forward,
Hannah
