Four wild red wolf litters have given one of the world’s rarest canids a fragile boost. 🐺

The July estimate counts 23–24 adults and subadults, plus 12–16 pups, in eastern North Carolina. The wild population once fell to seven animals. Roads, early pup mortality and limited habitat still threaten recovery, but four family groups raising young in the wild is the progress conservationists have fought decades to see.

Finley returned to the ocean seven months after arriving severely underweight and missing part of a front flipper. 🐢

The adult loggerhead began eating soon after rescue, then received a carefully managed blood transfusion from another loggerhead named Orion. Finley grew from 41.1 kilograms to 60.1 kilograms before veterinary staff cleared her release.

She entered the surf carrying flipper tags and a satellite transmitter, turning recovery into a new stream of data for sea-turtle research.
