Fun Fact: The urge to laugh at an inappropriate moment is a well-documented phenomenon psychologists call “inappropriate laughter” or “nervous laughter” — the brain’s stress-response system and its humor-processing regions share overlapping neural pathways, which is why high-pressure, serious environments tend to make suppressed laughter feel almost physically impossible to contain. Studies on inhibitory control show that the harder someone tries to suppress a reaction, the stronger the urge typically becomes, a feedback loop sometimes called the “ironic process theory,” first described by psychologist Daniel Wegner in 1987.
