Our city needs a strong, progressive leader as its next At-Large DC Councilmember. Someone who will champion the cause of vulnerable residents and work to solve problems at the root. Someone who will not pander to special interests or just address the symptoms while kicking the can down the road.

I testified yesterday before the Committee on Health about opioids and the need for a healthcare workforce for Ward 7 & 8 residents. There will be 13,000 healthcare jobs needed over the next 5 years--in long term care, home health aides and certified nursing assistants. Apprenticeships can start in high school.

I also spoke about the need for sobering centers east of the river to address the rise in opioid deaths. Five Advisory Neighborhood Commissions have unanimously approved a resolution by the Health Alliance Network, which I lead, and the Opioid Solutions Working Group, to do that. With a sixth ANC expected, representatives of more than 96,000 residents in wards 7 & 8 will be on record calling for this and related life-saving action.

At-Large Council Candidate forum 02/18/2022

Thank you DC for Democracy for hosting the At-Large Candidates' Forum this past Wednesday night (2/16). Three key take-aways:

1) As the first At-Large Candidate to advocate for our Marion Barry Jobs Program to provide youth employment opportunities year round, I am happy to be joined by my peers in common cause. By making youth employment supports available year round we can engage our youth in productive activity after school, address more of the financial shortcomings that many of our youth experience, and proactively prepare our future leaders to enter the professional workforce.

2) Universal Basic Income is the beginning of a transformative, systematic approach to help residents heal from poverty as a social determinant. In brief, people talk about teaching a person to fish vs. giving a person a fish, why not and-both? This way, the student is not starving why they learn to use the fishing rod.

3) We cannot have real conversations about Affordable Housing without including discussion around income growth and job creation. Most are now aware that Homelessness is, literally, more costly to our society and economy than Housing. Still, Affordable Housing is not the ends in and of itself but a portion of the comprehensive approach to solving poverty.
