A suspected Iranian drone struck a coalition military base in Northeast Syria on Thursday, killing one American contractor and injuring six other servicemen. The main air defense system at the base was not operational at the time of the attack, raising questions about the vulnerability of the base and the cause of the system failure. U.S. intelligence has confirmed that the drone was Iranian, adding to the growing list of attacks by Iranian-backed forces on U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria.

The injured servicemen have been transported to a hospital in Germany and are in stable condition. An investigation into the system failure is ongoing, and the Pentagon has promised to conduct a review of the incident. In response to the attack, President Biden approved precision strikes on two facilities in eastern Syria utilized by groups affiliated with the IRGC, Iran’s primary branch of its armed forces.

The U.S. has been aiding the Syrian Free Army in eastern Syria, while the IRGC has backed Syrian forces under Bashar al-Assad for the last decade. The attack on the coalition base marks another escalation in the proxy war between the U.S. and Iran in Syria. In response to the U.S. strikes, Iran proxy forces launched 10 rockets at another U.S. base in Northeast Syria, but there were no casualties or damage reported.

Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder emphasized that the U.S. does not seek conflict with Iran but will take the protection of its personnel seriously and respond decisively if they are threatened. The focus in Syria remains on the defeat ISIS mission, but the U.S. will not hesitate to defend itself against attacks by Iranian-backed forces.

Bragg has defended his investigation and accused Republicans of interfering in a local prosecution.
