June is prime time for turtles! We typically receive a lot of calls each June about turtles crossing the road or laying eggs in backyards. For tips on helping a turtle cross the road, check out this handy dandy guide from Bird and Moon Comics and the Alongside Wildlife Foundation! If you have a turtle nesting in your yard, the best thing to do is to leave it alone. The female turtle needs peace and quiet for a couple of hours as she lays her eggs and covers up the nest with soil. She will leave the area and not return; turtles do not tend their nests like birds. It's helpful to avoid the nest area to avoid disturbing it or harming the eggs. Hatchlings will emerge later in the summer to find their way in the world!
