Today, we honor the life and legacy of former Warrensburg Chief of Police Gene Burden.

For nearly 40 years, Chief Burden dedicated his life to serving the Warrensburg community. His leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public safety left a lasting mark not only on this department, but on our entire community.

The officers who wear this badge today continue to serve on the foundation he helped build. His vision for professionalism, service, and excellence shaped generations of officers and strengthened the Warrensburg Police Department in ways that will be felt for years to come.

While many knew him as Chief, those who served alongside him knew a leader who cared deeply about his officers, his community, and the profession he loved. His influence reached far beyond his years of service, and his legacy will continue to guide those who follow in his footsteps.

On behalf of the men and women of the Warrensburg Police Department, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the Burden family, his friends, and everyone whose lives were touched by his leadership and kindness.

Some leaders leave behind memories. Others leave behind a stronger department than the one they found. Chief Gene Burden did both.

Thank you, Chief, for your decades of service, your steadfast leadership, and the example you set for all who followed.

Between April 2026 and June 2026, the Warrensburg Police Department received multiple reports of graffiti appearing on various structures in the city. Our officers took these reports seriously and conducted a thorough investigation.

On June 27, 2026, an arrest was made for all the vandalism reports the department had received. Charges will be sent to the state prosecutor's office for review. This individual is innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. After the investigation was concluded, it was also discovered this individual is responsible for vandalism in the county. This information was provided to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office for further investigation.

We would like to thank those who notified us regarding the acts of vandalism, as well as those who provided information that helped lead to the individual's arrest.
