Staging the lighting | Part 1
When it comes to creating a mood in your home, lighting is crucial.
“Good lighting design should create moments of light and shade in the space,” says interior designer Nicholas Kaiko, who often sees harsh downlighting in older homes.
“Downlights are good when their placement is considered — you might use one to wash onto a piece of art, or to highlight a wall finish, or to draw someone down a hallway — but overuse is bad.”
Designers use layered lighting, meaning multiple sources of light from different points in the room, to create balance.
For example, a kitchen might have ambient light from a pendant over the kitchen island, task light in a strip under cabinets to create a safe workspace, and accent light to showcase glassware on open shelving.
It’s important to layer lighting like this to avoid the so-called hospital effect. “Overhead lighting should be limited to task-orientated areas, like kitchens, bathrooms and home offices," says Kaiko.
"In other parts of your house, you want to create mood with lamps, pendants and wall sconces.”
