Doing the physical practice of yoga without applying it to your daily life is like watering the branch rather than watering the root. When I teach kids yoga and mindfulness the first thing I try to ask them is, “who practiced since I last saw you?” this gives kids the understanding that yoga is not something you go “do” once a week, it’s a practice meant to support you in every moment. It can be as simple as noticing thoughts or regulating the breath.

It should be the same for adults. No matter what age, people should finish a practice feeling a sense of agency over their internal lives. If you’re walking out of yoga class feeling diminished, depleted or like the teacher held the power over your life, then something is NOT right. You have the tools to tend to the root of the matter.

Speaking of the root of the matter, when I think of Winter, I think of the roots of something. It’s what keeps us connected and grounded. I used to dread winter, but when I started to honor its introspective nature, I started to feel nourished by this season. Winter is a great time to rest, digest and integrate so you can fully rise to the occasion of spring.

This winter, I’ve been diving into my ancestry. It’s the first time I’ve dug into my roots and I’m fascinated! It’s like an eagle eye view looking back on my family who came before me. As I time travel into the past, down the familial line, I am noticing patterns. Names, birthdays, occupations, and the life death cycles repeat, over and over. Some of the patterns and cycles we can break, we have control over. And some, much like the seasons, are out of our control. We simply must learn how to mediate, navigate and use what we inherit to our advantage.

There is a new winter practice available for Nestful subscribers. It focuses on turning in as we explore forward folds in different variations. My (almost) 3 year old comes in at the end and shows us his folds, and it’s a great opportunity to see how you can adapt your yoga practice to include your child. It’s a quick taste of new classes to come! Start your free trial soon if you haven’t yet! 💗🌬️

My goal with Nestful is not to make yoga practice become another thing on your list of things to do, but to help you incorporate yoga into your life in a way that supports you moment to moment. 🕊

For many caregivers, carving out time to do an hour long asana practice multiple times a week or even ONCE a week ends up adding more work to our plate. It’s also time you could spend resting, connecting with loved ones or doing something you love. 🌲

Yoga should help you connect to yourself and get honest about your needs. Yoga is not a box you check off your to do list. Yoga is happening in every moment. 💗

“Breathing is a process of eating and feeding the mind and the imagination, as well as the body. A trained breath stabilizes the nervous system and communicates with deeper parts of oneself as well as one’s surroundings.”
