The combat robotics project is our largest undertaking! It began last fall, with the team formulating an initial robot design and team proposal. This summer, we are revamping our efforts, forming outreach, marketing, engineering, logistics and project management departments to formulate a robot design to submit to a robot combat competition. Due to the onset of Covid-19, we are working with our university to establish effective safety strategies. This project is led by Justin Leung, Nathan Cai, Jovana Bijelic, and Emma Barash.
We are currently finalizing the design of our robot. We have decided to adopt a vertical spinner bot design, but this design comes with some challenges, including turning issues and gaps in the armor (specifically the sides). To address these concerns, we made two modifications: a weighted disk spinning at a calculated speed to allow for better agility and hinged flaps on the side of the bot to fill in the gaps and give us enough sloping on the side to nullify ramming attacks.
We will be posting more information as the project progresses, and we are eager to see where it takes us!
