The “Soft” Skills Employers Take Very Seriously 💼

Beyond problem-solving and teamwork, the National Association of Colleges and Employers' Job Outlook 2025 survey highlights a powerful cluster of traits that employers want to see in new grads:
🔸 Initiative
🔸 Strong work ethic / professionalism
🔸 Flexibility/adaptability and analytical skills

Future Problem Solving quietly cultivates these every season:
🔹 Initiative: Students are presented with topics to dig into, ask questions, and pursue research outside class time.
🔹 Work ethic: FPS isn’t a one-and-done assignment; it’s a process. Students revise, practice, and persist through multiple rounds and feedback cycles.
🔹 Professional habits: Meeting deadlines, following a rubric, collaborating respectfully, and responding to feedback are all part of the experience.
🔹 Adaptability: New scenarios, new challenges, surprise constraints—students learn to pivot and keep moving.

When employers say they want “career-ready” candidates, this is what they mean.

Programs like Future Problem Solving give students a safe place to practice being the kind of teammates and contributors they’ll need to be in internships and early-career roles.

And that’s why Future Problem Solving belongs in any conversation about preparing students for the future of work.
