Member's Spotlight: Meet Ann McGuire, Vice President Education.
I joined TM back in 2019 after I landed a new role as Director of Marketing and wanted to really work on my presentation skills. Speaking in front of a professional audience has always been a bit difficult for me - a little bit of imposter syndrome at work. My goal was to get more comfortable speaking in front of business leaders and "stick to the script" more than just rambling on (which I have a tendency to do). It has worked greatly for me in these type of situations. I am much more conscious of what I am saying and how I am saying it. I "go into" Toastmasters mode and my speaking becomes modulated and measured and very aware of what I am going to say and how I am going to say it. I've gained a lot of confidence in speaking in an adhoc manner as well, which is important in meetings.
Most memorable Toastmasters experience or speech:
I think one of the most memorable speeches I've given was "Edit Your Life" which I gave for the 2020 International awards. I made it to District where I came in 2nd. I had great many great coaching sessions with then-member Sandra Centerino and it was an equally terrifying and exhilarating experience.
Advice to someone considering Toastmasters:
I would tell anyone considering it to just come on down and spend some time with us. It really is a very comfortable way to get into what many consider "uncomfortable" public speaking. You go at your own speed, starting with small roles and growing at your own pace. There is great support and everyone has a story about why they are there and can show you how far they've come.
