🔊 Sound ON elevator ASMR
An icon. A ritual. A disappearing craft.
We were honored to have documented the final chapter of Smith Tower’s manually operated elevator before it was retired for good.
Completed in 1914 in Pioneer Square, the 38-story Smith Tower was Seattle’s first skyscraper and the tallest building west of the Mississippi for nearly 50 years. Commissioned by Lyman C. Smith, this Neoclassical landmark became known for its distinctive “wedding cake” design, famed observatory, and colorful role in the city’s early history.
A moment in Seattle history, preserved on film.
